Every morning at 5 AM, Rajesh Kumar would carefully fold his thin blanket and tuck it into a crack in the concrete pillar he called home. For three years, the underside of Mumbai's Bandra bridge wasn't just his shelter – it was his address, his reality, and what he believed would be his future.
Today, Rajesh still wakes up at 5 AM. But instead of folding a blanket under a bridge, he's opening the shutters of his chai stall, preparing for his morning customers. The journey between these two 5 AMs is a story of transformation, made possible by a community of givers who believed that small, consistent support could change a life.
"I never imagined having my own roof again," Rajesh says, stirring a pot of masala chai in his tiny but immaculate kitchen. "When you've lived on the streets for years, you stop dreaming of walls and doors. You focus on surviving each day."
Rajesh's path to homelessness began like many others – a series of misfortunes that cascaded into disaster. A workplace injury, depleted savings, and family health emergencies created a perfect storm that left him with nothing but a blanket and determination to survive.
But survival wasn't enough. Rajesh had skills – he'd worked in chai shops for fifteen years before his accident. What he lacked was the ₹15,000 needed to rent a small room and rebuild his life. Traditional banks saw him as too risky. Large charities had complex application processes he couldn't navigate without a permanent address.
